One of Pittsburgh’s claim to fame is the local filming of
the zombie movie “Night of the Living Dead.” We seem to crave a little zombie
fright this time of year and just north of Pittsburgh, you can get your fill of
them. At Zombies of the Corn you can take your chances in the Zombie Compound, test you navigation skills in the Z Maze, listen
to ghost stories around campfires and take aim with your paintball gun on the
Zombie Shoot. It is a complete Halloween package of fright and fun.
Reflection
Zombies are the subject of numerous movies but since I am not a fan of extreme fear, I prefer films like “Zombieland” and “Warm Bodies” that merge horror with comedy. Just like those movies, Zombies of the Corn mixed fright with a carnival atmosphere. There were roaming ghoulish characters, fire jugglers, face painting and the opportunity to become a computer generated zombie.
Unlike a Haunted House where you have less than an hour of thrill,
we spent over 2 hours creeping through the grounds. In addition to exploring the three attractions, many people were roasting
marshmallows and congregating by the bonfires. (You can also rent a bonfire and bring
your own food and adult beverages.)
We first ventured to the Z Maze that produced more laughs over our poor navigation skills than fright. The Zombie Compound was by far the scariest attraction. We walked through a few rooms that looked just like a set from a good horror film. We screamed as zombies, and at one point, an oversize green crow lunged into view or followed us (none touch you). The adrenaline rush from the scare and the amusement from our reaction produced bursts of laughter. At times the laughter was continuous.

Zombies of the Corn gave me just enough “scare” to celebrate Halloween but not so much that I had to sleep with
the lights on. It was full package fright
and fun.
