Founded in 1994, Attack Theatre is a modern dance company
that fuses live music and other art forms in their performances. They are a
company with a mission to “remain curious” for new ideas. That is just what they are doing with the "24-25 Season of Fire.” In Sessions, alt-pop artist Rachael Sage,
and cellist Dave Eggar combust with the dance company for an evening of storytelling,
song, music and movement.
Reflection
Artistic Director, Michele De La Reza explained that “Attack Theatre is dancing that attacks the landscape.” I was not sure what she meant until I experienced this show. The music and the movement meld together in a visual representation of the song’s landscape. According to Sage, “It’s a great honor for an artist to see their work so beautifully interpreted in dance.”
Sage with an infectious smile and dressed in vibrant colors shared her story and passions behind her music. She has an impressive 17 albums under her belt. Her sound seemed to combine jazz and pop with a soft wispy tone. I enjoyed the way she commanded the music making the abrupt cuts using a snap or a click of her foot. I am new to this artist, but I was mesmerised and relaxed by the melodies enjoying the lyrics, especially in her title song for her next album, “Canopy.”
Dave Eggar has played with so many artists; Coldplay, Foreigner, Nora
Jones, Paul Simon and more. He appeared with numerous symphonies all over the
world. I thought how lucky I was to hear his cello in an intimate setting.
Attack Theatre’s new home in Lawrenceville is an intimate venue with only 109 seats. Sessions felt as if I was in a hidden NYC speakeasy. Attack Theatre gave us all the opportunity to experience the warmth of the artistic fire when Rachel Sage, Dave Eggar and the dance company ignited this evening.
