One of Pittsburgh’s claim to fame is the local filming of the zombie
movie “Night of the Living Dead.” Zombie fright is in full swing this time of
year. If you are looking for a place to celebrate during the pandemic, you can find your fill of the undead just north of Pittsburgh at Zombies of the Corn. At this Zombie mecca you can walk though the Zombie Compound, test you
navigation skills in the corn husk Z Maze, and take aim with your paintball gun on
the Zombie Shoot ride. It is a complete out door Halloween package of fright and fun.
Reflection Zombies are the subject of numerous movies but since I am not a fan of extreme fear, I prefer films like “Zombieland” and “Warm Bodies” that merge horror with comedy.
Just like those movies,
Zombies of the Corn mixes fright with a carnival atmosphere. There are roaming ghoulish characters, fire jugglers, ghost stories and the opportunity to become a computer digital generated zombie.

Tickets are timed and
limited to keep everyone safe. Masks are
required for all three attractions: Z
Maze, Zombie Compound and Zombie Shoot. Only
patrons that come together enter together, everything is cleaned between
groups and social distancing was adhered to in lines.
Unlike a Haunted House where you have less than an hour of thrill, you can spend several hours creeping and social distancing through the grounds. In addition to exploring the three attractions, many groups that came together were roasting marshmallows and congregating by the bonfires. (You can also rent a bonfire and bring your own food and adult beverages.)The corn husk Z Maze produced more laughs over my poor navigation skills than fright. The Zombie Compound was by far the scariest attraction. The rooms looked just like a set from a good horror film.
We screamed as zombies and at one point, an oversize green crow
lunged into view or followed us (none touch you).
The adrenaline rush from the scare and the amusement from our reaction produced bursts of contagious laughter.

Shooting zombies from a tractor with a paintball gun was as fun as it sounds. This was so much better than playing a video game. As we rode through the woods, the driver reminded us to “ Be alert! Zombies just escaped from a nearby prison!” They jumped out from behind the trees and we all rapidly fired at the targets. I am happy to report that the “living dead fellas” did not race toward the tractor.
Zombies of the Corn gives you just enough “scare” to celebrate Halloween
but not so much that you need to sleep with the lights on. It was full
package of fright and fun.
